Simple Changes Can Reduce Your Cancer Risk

by Sam Tsang

The United States Senate recently designated February 2004 as National Cancer Prevention Month.  In doing so, it stated that Americans need to recognize that they can help prevent cancer by modifying their diet, not smoking and exercising regularly.

Changes You Can Make

The American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) recommends the following guidelines for healthier living and lowering your cancer risk:

· Choose a diet rich in a variety of plant-based foods—vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans.

· Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits—5 servings a day.

· Maintain a healthy weight and be physically active.

· Drink alcohol only in moderation, if at all.

· Select foods low in fat and salt.

· Prepare and store food safely.

And always remember... Do not use tobacco in any form.

Making Those Changes

Start making slow but steady changes in your routine.  Substitute vegetables or fruit for animal protein and fat-laden snacks.  Choose physical activities that are right for you and that you enjoy.  Slowly build up the time you spend doing them.  To maintain a healthy weight, eat more fruits and vegetables and less calorie- and fat-laden foods, and take the time to be physically active.

Cancer is the second most frequent cause of death among Americans after heart disease. For more information and tips on how you can reduce your risk, see the cancer section of our website.
